About Larrison's Diner
Elizabeth and Kevin Larrison welcome you to the website of their historic diner. Seymour, Indiana is the home of Larrison's Diner. The town of Seymour is as interesting as Larrison's Diner in its rich history and unique contributions. Seymour is 'America's Small Town' and is the birthplace of rockers and entertainers, John Mellencamp and Larry Crane. The first train robbery in history was pulled-off by the Reno Brothers of Seymour near the small community of Rockford in Jackson County. They were hanged before they could spend their loot, and much of the booty was never found. The famous 'Lady Seymour' ironing board was made locally by a company that is now called Seymour Housewares. Captured V2 rockets from Nazi Germany were brought to Seymour's Freeman Airfield at the close of World War ll. The V2's and the captured scientists that engineered them became the initial thrust to our own space program and NASA. The famous Tuskegee Airmen did some of their training at Freeman Airfield as well. WCW professional wrestling champ, Rip Rogers (aka,The Hustler Rip Rogers) was also born and raised here in Seymour, Indiana. Years later Rip would usher in a new young protégé named Danny Holle into the WWE (Danny was one of the colorful Basham Brothers). Only time will tell if Danny will leave a historic mark on professional wrestling. Author and former Governor of Indiana, Edgar Whitcomb was born in neighboring Jennings County but raised his family here in Seymour. He wrote the books, Escape from Corregidor (1958) based on his experiences during WWII; and On Celestial Wings (1998). The list goes on and on, and as you know, Larrison's Diner has seen its share of celebrities. A scene from the movie Falling From Grace, was shot at Larrison's Diner. John Mellencamp, Larry Crane, Claude Akins, Murial Hemingway, and Kay Lenz all spent time in the Diner during the filming of the movie. Colonel Sanders (of KFC fame) used to stop in for a homemade milk shake and some conversation with Ed Larrison. Ed began his restaurant career managing a few Kentucky Fried Chicken locations under Joe Hall (the Pines Restaurant). Author Jim Lilliefor's book entitled, Highway 50, Ain't that America, has an entire chapter dedicated to Ed Larrison and the diner. Larrison's Diner has been featured in TIME magazine and U.S. NEWS and WORLD REPORT. Democratic Congressional Representative, Baron P. Hill frequents Larrison's Diner. Baron is a native of Seymour and is in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Retired Seymour basketball coach, Barney Scott is also in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. More recently, retired Seymour football coach, Joe Goodman was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. These are a few of the highlights that have garnished the history of Larrison's Diner, and its home town of Seymour, Indiana. We hope you visit us soon! |
